Over my shoulder in your eyes

i
see it in
your eyes

the way
you look past my
arms wrapped around
your shoulders

you see something
that is
breaking your heart

i see
the waves crashing
on the sand

i see
the moon
dipping below
the horizon
at the start of a new day

i see
something that makes
my stomach clench
into
a million tiny
knots

because the
thing
i see
in your eyes

i know that
it's making
you hurt

a hurt that
i have felt

and a hurt
i don't wish
upon you

your eyes
are still the rising of the sun
and the break of a new wave

but it's a
cloudy morning
and your wave is
stifled by another receding

please
shine
brighter for
me

and look
away from
whatever is over
my shoulder

Flower

poke of green waiting patiently
soft as the morning
stretching
for the sun

born to
thrive
destined
not to

as all things
must
come to
an end

tiny color standing strong
as the
dry and haunting
winds

of change
and time
and challenge
buffet it

the hardships rushing in
with the force of a crashing wave
and clinging to stay
as the sands have withstood the world

pale pink shivering
with the effort
of the
years

waiting
for its
chance to
fly

as it sadly
watches the others
grow tall and flourish
around it

wilted brown remembering
the days of
small sunshine smiles
and laughter

of the time when it
stood not-quite-tall-enough
and congratulated others
on their accomplishments

knowing--hoping--trusting--that

Rubik's Cube

a
tangled mess
of color
jumbled and
broken

many positions
too many to count
but all could be wrong
if you do just one out of
sequence

but
we build
on each
task that comes before
and maybe
eventually
you are righted again

Girls

yes, i am a
girl.

am i
good enough
for
you?

have i held
myself
to a high enough
standard to be considered
an equal to you?

or am i
still
just a notch below
you
because i'm a
girl?

does being a
girl
in this day and age mean
walking down the street
and having to be
afraid?
afraid of what?
hmmm, let's think...

or does it mean
that my
work
is not
worth more
than
my new haircut
or clothing?
...
is it that my work is not
worth anything to
you,
or is simply that
my looks
are the
only thing
to care about?

Real Americans

calling all the real americans
those who fight for freedom
and justice
and what they believe in

calling all the real americans
those who speak
and those who
listen

calling all the real americans
those who admit to
their wrongs
and try to fix them

calling all the real americans
those who learn from our past
take action in the present
and hope for a future

calling all the real americans

Darkness

the darkness
holds my
silent tears.

as it
takes me farther from
my home.

but i knew it would.

the darkness remembers
my hurried footsteps to the
meeting spot.

and how it carried me
over from my country
into someone else's.

but i was ready.

the darkness consoles me
with the hope of
safety.

because it's safer in the dark.

the darkness
remembers my hurried escape
from the truck.

the darkness
heard the tears of my sister.
the only one i could say goodbye to.

because goodbyes are for temporary, silence is forever.

...

the darkness
remembered the girl that
ran in the hopes of a new life

and the darkness
knew her hardships
and troubles that carried her further away.

after all, many had come before her

but now all the darkness

Halfway

halfway between
the switch blinks
as the fire is kindled
to start a nation
or a rebellion
or a war

one idea can ripple
across
and through
the world
to touch millions

and we just
go
in our turning ways
desperate for change
innovation and success

but its halfway between
that the fire
is born
