Freezing warmth
This poem was given dramatic presentation by the Vermont Stage Company in December 05

Wake up to
Frosted glass window panes
Another day
Another way
Smell the cocoa already
Wafting
Drafting
Winding
Binding
Up the stairs
Sweet smell of air
Little white specks
Try their hardest to stay afloat
In the chocolaty goodness
Kind of like us
Little marshmallows
Inevitably
Sinking
A polar white blanket
Covers the earth
Wrapping it up
In hugs and kisses
And memories
Of yesterday’s Christmases
Sleigh bells ring are you listening?
A red sparkle at every house
On the block
If it’s not there
They will be
Criticized
Those Scrooges
Don’t even have time to put up a few
Christmas lights?
For the children?
Snow falls
Nipping my nose
Bristling my eye lashes
Reddening my cheeks
Freezing me to the bone
Chilled
Inside and out
But still I stay put
On my little mountain
A star twinkles
Announcing to all of the world
That it’s
Christmas Eve
Tells the kids
To get ready for bed
A big bearded man
Visits your house tonight
Kind of a weird tradition
If you ask
Me
Sappy smell of pine
Swirling through the house
Billowing branches
Canopy presents
Underneath
Silver paper
Blue, red, and green
Millions of bows
What a scene
Picture perfect
A postcard
But it can’t capture the
Feeling
Of the world
That morning
There’s something about
Winter
That warms your
Soul
Even though it’s
Freezing
Outside.
