Mother Ocean

Introduction: When I was young, my mother would often sing to me when I felt restless. She sang a Chinese song roughly translated to “Mother Ocean.” I would instantly fall asleep. While I no longer remember most of the lyrics, I have written a poem that roughly captures what I feel when I see the sea and when I used to hear this song.

Mother Ocean,
Mother Ocean,
How you give me tranquility
In the chaotic world,
Of hectic haste and frenzy,
Of texting notifications and beeping cars.
When I see you,
Your quiet waves are a balm for my frenetic soul.

Mother Ocean,
Mother Ocean,
How you quietly comfort me
In this confusing world,
Where I cannot seem to find myself.
Only when I sit on your golden shores,
Building magical worlds and peaceful creatures,
Do I truly feel free to be me.
