Forest

SnowStars's picture

If you chance to stroll through my woods
You will find a meandering path snaking between twisted trees
Tread firmly on the packed earth
Pounded down over long years
Here and there ferns reach for the dappled sunlight
The atmosphere sparkles and glows with a brilliant emerald green radiance
Filtered through a bower of young leaves

A gentle breeze whispers in the needles of the tall sentinel pine
Stirring the mild, young air
Smells of crisp, brown leaves and tender plants
Mingle with the clean taste of dawn

If you explore further
The dark thicket of old, gnarled trees
Offers a peaceful retreat
Continue your ramble
Venture to the abandoned, overgrown pasture
Beyond the glen

On the young trees
Smears of dark water
Are all that blaze your trail
They linger to signify my recent passing

Had you hastened your step
Perhaps you would have discovered me
Clutching each sapling
In a tight embrace
Face resting on each trunk
Quiet tears flowing like pearls
Staining the smooth bark with heart-splitting despondency

Instead, all that remains
The stains
And a fluttering scarf
Yellow silk snagged on a branch
Dancing in the wind
But the airy forest is deserted

I am already
Far away
Deep in the peaceful woods I love

This is beautiful. I love

This is beautiful. I love your use of language here. My only possible suggestion is: expand it. You've made me want to find out more about this character, about these woods. Maybe you can make this into a series of poems (or even prose would be quite an interesting challenge). I think you have a lot to work with here, and you might be pleasantly surprised with what you come up with.

Of course, that's my advice and you can take it or leave it; this piece is impressive regardless.

Thank you for the advice!

Thank you for the advice! You've inspired me; now I want to find out more about her and her woods, too! :)
Often, I don't quite know what I'm writing about- I know very little about this girl, except what I wrote in the poem. I think I will try to write more about her!

No problemo. Glad to be of service. :)

Half the time I don't even know what I'm writing about either, but it's almost more fun that way. Developing it becomes just as much of an adventure to the writer as it may be to the person who ends up reading it.

Haha, yeah, same here.

I'm actually currently working on a series of vignettes for English. (okay, was working...) It's really fun to write in different styles just for the heck of it.

Yes!
I find myself in the unusual position of wanting more English homework; at least more interesting prompts. Our assignments are DEADLY dull, and poison my writer's brain.
Since I started writing on my own more, English class has grown incredibly maddening and frustrating!
hee hee! :)

The same thing happened to

The same thing happened to me this year! In fact, this current assignment is the most interesting one we've ever gotten (so I'm really excited :P).

By the way, half of you just left.
And, coincidentally, what grade are you in?
Though I'm kinda a stickler for privacy, that's not too revealing...
Right?

I saw that!
And now the rest of me is back!

I'm in 9th today.
But, you know, when I'm feeling especially abstract I might be a little older...

Yes, and without YWP I probably wouldn't make it.
It's a very hostile group of people overall.

Yes, I felt the same way.

When you get to high school, do you integrate with other schools? That's always pretty helpful.
