I totally agree. Most of those annoying pop singers are a disgrace to music. I don't normally have any problems with my emo music scaring my friends, since they listen to the same music. It really isn't bad, it can just get a little too hardcore for some people. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I completely agree -about pop music, at least. It just sounds so...so contrived. The singers have to make an effort to squeeze out a single note, and the instruments aren't often real. The contrast is partially why I love Broadway music -the orchestration is so lush, and the voices are so big.
I'm not a big fan of emo, either. Perhaps I'm just naive, but to me it all sounds the same, even the lyrics. I may be getting into trouble here, but if it's so emotional, why do all the lyrics seem alike? Emotions are varied.
I'm not being facetious about this; I'm honestly curious. Anyone care to explain?

I think that the lyrics are
I think that the lyrics are similar most of the time, and the actual music part of it sounds a lot like all the other music as well. But if you find the right bands/artists and listen to all the song's lyrics, you can start to see major differences between songs. The same is true for the music, if you listen to songs often enough they all sound very different and unique. I think its almost like an acquired taste, you have to listen to it for a while to fully begin to appreciate and enjoy it (like brussel sprouts...)

What I don't understand, however, is that "emo", though it's short for "emotional", has come to define a certain type of music, a.k.a punk. Couldn't any music with a highly emotional quality earn that label?
Sweeney Todd is most certainly not punk, but I would call it emo. It's highly emotional.

I really am open to most kinds of music. Even with the earlier parts of this conversation (and do not judge me)I do like the jonas brothers. They are amazingly hott and i think they are pretty talented. I don't like some of their music, but overall they're good. I would still choose punk over that anyday though.
