Half The Time (Half of My Heart)

Half the time my eyes are closed,
you seem to be glaring at me.
Half the time they're wide open,
they can't seem to meet yours.
Half the time I'm asleep dreaming,
you're wide awake in my mind.
Half the time I try to remember,
it feels so impossible to forget.
Half the time I listen to sounds,
there drops a heavy thump.
Half the time I look in the mirror,
I try to imagine what you saw.
Half the time I feel disgusting,
the thought creeps forward.
Half the time I quiver at it,
I notice it fading so slightly.
Half the time is only one half
and the other is dripping.
Half of my heart is thumping
and the other is trying,
struggling to shed itself away.
You only took half
and you ran with it too quickly.
Half of my heart,
my time,
can't wait around anymore.

  • A Nine-Year Journey

For nine years, I've been a part of YWP and for nine years, I've felt seen by this community. Even as I've grown up, I've watched new young writers come and share their thoughts, emotions, and stories.
  • Beaming writer

In sixth grade, our class had a show-and-tell every week,
and every week, a small handful of students were selected to participate in the next one.
As I was selected, anxiety kicked in.
I wasn't really proud of anything.
  • Love And Embalming

They carried you away in a black hearse.
    Our black eyes,
    beaten and bruised by love,
    caressed your black coffin.
They opened your casket and there you were,
    your eyes closed,
    relaxed and so cold,
and yet you seemed so alive.
