Thoughts on my sleeve

I sit on the steps in front of my house.
Doing absolutely nothing except breathing, (obviously), and chewing a piece of gum that is beginning to lose its flavor.
My dog runs across the front lawn, for seemingly no particular reason, barking like crazy...probably at the neighbors' ghost from next door...but that's just my theory.
I look up into a piercing blue sky. Speckled here and there with little white clouds.
I drum my fingers against my thigh, and pull my baseball cap lower over my eyes, looking at the random words I've written in sharpy on the underside of the brim.
Done,
Run,
Pun,
Sun... Wow, the sun is bright today.
I hear feet tapping on the sidewalk and look up briefly.
To no surprise, it's my peppy next door neighbor and ironically also my homeroom teacher, going out for a jog.
"Hey!" She calls out cheerfully, as she continues off down the block.
I don't bother to respond.
I see a few kids setting up a lemonade stand across the street...
But right now I'm not thirsty.
I sigh, and pull out a pencil with the end chewed off, or something, out of my pocket and a little notebook I like to keep with me, for when I feel like I need to write.
I write about most anything I can think of really...
I watch the kids across the street intently for a little while, as they fight and complain over just about everything...
Then, I put my pencil to the paper and begin,
"It all started with a lemonade stand..."
I stop and start to scribble on my sneaker...

    question it

    Mostly questions,
That's what the music told me.
In the street just before twilight
You see the world through sunglasses,
    Through wine glasses,
Through glass windows that keep you from the heat.
  • Umbrella

A girl bought an umbrella yesterday — to protect herself from the rain.
It was a nice thing to have it. This way she could see the rain falling all around the umbrella, but not have to get wet.
    She was protected.
  • Peace

We can lie on our backs and gaze up at the sky,
    Let the seconds become hours,
Allow the birds to pass by.
Let the noises dissolve into murmurs and songs,
Let the light on our faces keep us peaceful and calm.
