hurricane

there's a hurricane tomorrow, but we still

have school. hurricane, and you can smell it

boiling on the horizon, a heady, light-headed

sort of feeling, but my brother and i

sit together in the courtyard

and eat the last of the ice-cream

and watch the crows take flight.

we have homework due

tomorrow. we have a hurricane

tomorrow. when i was seven

i watched the sky churn in six shades of green

like the inside of a spinning bottle

and thought it was the most beautiful thing

i'd ever see.

my brother asks me to help with chemistry.

i smear chocolate over his nose and say

of course, of course

the hurricane is not here yet.

there is nothing more beautiful than that.

    the snake is hungry

    so the snake will eat

and eat it does, chewing, gnawing,

and will you ever notice, little thing,

that it is your own tail

    you are swallowing?

from salt and foam and scales

    steal the hearts of stone

    nacreous shells, dying husks,

    the honey-sweet flesh that once

    clung to its bones

    to die of thirst.

meet me at the end of the world

the space between firestorms and tsunamis

    across the acid oceans

    and here, where the rot

has begun to reclaim the cities at last.
