The First Ride of the Year

The First Ride of the Year

By Emma Blanchard
Chelsea Public School, Grade 11

I picked up the note on the kitchen table that read, "Meet me at Fred's house with the snowmobile." Quickly putting on my snow gear and walking outside for the first time I see the fresh powdered snow cover the whole landscape. The brisk air fills my lungs as I take my first deep breath. A big smile covers my face as I bend down to pick up a handful of fresh snow. With my cream-colored snow pants and my bright blue jacket I walk over to the snowmobile, leaving my footprints packed behind me. Grabbing my helmet I frantically strap it on. Turning the ignition key to "on" I then reach for the pull chord. As the snowmobile starts I quickly push the throttle, making sure it won't stall. I excitedly hop on, keeping my feet comfortably in place. The throttle drops to the handle as I shoot out from my driveway. Riding on the wide open trails, I go by trees of all sizes covered with clean white snow. I continue riding until I arrive at my uncle's house and find both him and my dad suited up and ready. With an excited grin on his face and clapping his hands together he shouts, "Read for the first ride of the year, Em?" I quickly nod my head yes. Both of them start up their snowmobiles and we take off, not knowing where we are going. As we ride over the perfectly groomed trails I take notice of how much the scenery changes. I love to watch the snow fall off the trees when a small gust of wind blows, making the birds fly out from their nests. Winter is my favorite season and I can't wait till it starts.
