Vermont Authors

QwertyGirl's picture

Hello!
I am here at YWP and we are in need of your help.
We have a grant to bring in authors for workshops. Vermont authors. I was told to make a list. Problem: I don't know very many Vermont authors.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

(NOTE- They should really be alive. No Robert Frost. )

MM edit:

Here are a few Vermont authors and poets followed by an example of what they're written to get you thinking. Let us know who you like and who we can add to the list.

- Peter Gould, Write Naked
- Doug Wilhelm, The Revealers
- Karen Hesse, Stowaway, Witness, Just Juice
- Joe Citro, Green Mountain Ghosts, Ghouls, & Unsolved Mysteries
- John Irving, A Prayer for Owen Meany, The World According to Garp
- Julia Alvarez, In the Time of the Butterflies, Before We Were Free
- Archer Mayor, The Catch: A Joe Gunther Novel
- Chris Bohjalian, Trans-Sister Radio, The Double Bind, Idyll Banter
- Howard Frank Mosher, On Kingdom Mountain
- Geoff Hewitt, Hewitt's Guide to Slam Poetry and Poetry Slam, Only What's Imagined
- Ellen Bryant Voigt, Shadows of Heaven
- Katherine Paterson, Bridge to Terabithia
- David Stahler Jr., Doppelganger
- Jennifer McMahon, Promise Not to Tell, Dismantled
- Tim Brookes, Driveaway Diaries
- Alison Bechdel, Fun Home
- Mark Freeman, The Kindling of Greenfyr
- Rob Hunter, September Swim.

There are definitely gaps, and it is your job to help us fill them.

Thank you from YWP HQ!

Katherine Paterson writes amazing children's books... Bridge to Terabithia obviously stands out as the most famous. She's not a native, but currently resides in Barre.

The lady who wrote "All the Blue Moons at the Wallace Hotel" Love that book, read it when I was younger. She came to our elementary school, so idk if she lives here or what, but she has some kind of Essex/Vermont tie!

edit: Also, when I was in fifth grade a friend of mine held a "writer's club" dorky, I know. But still, her dad was a published author, he wrote a book called "Driveway Diaries" and they still live in Vermont (as far as I know) somewhere in Burlington. His name is Tim Brookes. I know I have a copy somewhere. I think he wrote another book too, I'm sure he'd love to come.

Mark Freeman "The Kindling

Mark Freeman "The Kindling of Greenfyre". He's a fantasy writer, but one really neat thing is how he brings his knowledge of wildlife into his stories. I know he'd be very happy to do a workshop!

Gordon Tallman wrote a book of poetry "Backroads and Bygones", he was born and raised a stones throw from my home, and he's loads of fun to talk with. He's a Vermonter through and through.

Hell knows. Heaven suspects.

question about authors:

Does the author in question have to write books? My parents have this friend who's a screenwriter. Does he count?

If he counts, his name is John Fusco, and he has scripted The Forbidden Kingdom, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Hidalgo, and Crossroads (not the Britney Spears one), among other things.

John Fusco...

...is fabulous. He's done a number of great screen plays with Ridley Scott as director. I spoke to him some time ago and he loves the YWP but I think he's been way too busy to follow up. If your parents know him, have they contact him and I'll follow up.

re food books...

.... I'm OK with nonfiction writers, particularly journalists or reviewers or biographers and the like. As long as the food book is not a cook book, I think that might be interesting. Writing style and skill are the primary determinants.

Note, just putting this out there.... Doug Wilhelm also wrote another book, "Falling" I think it was called. I read parts of it with my friend, but not the entire thing, and from what I read, it was pretty good. I'm sure he would love to come, he came to EMS 2ish years ago, and I think he'd love this. :]

Honestly, the only Vermont writer I know is Laura Williams-McCaffrey. She's mainly a children's author and poet (and also my teacher XD). I'm family friends with her, so I could ask!

Photography is not just the capture of an image that you already see with your eye. It's more like, narrowing down many of the things you see in a picture, until the things that are left spell out and simplify the hidden truths we see all the time.

It's a long shot....

but could we see if we could get Galway Kinnell? He's a poet not an author but he is amazing and influential and he is also my favorite. Fergus Falling is my favorite. I don't know, it's a long shot but if that actually worked out I would be eternally grateful. Oh, Ellen Bryant Voigt is great too.
