Beauty on the Outside

Values as shallow as the billboards we proclaim them on
All bright colors and glossy smiles
So happy! So fun! Superficially
That's all that matters.
Look at their faces.
Don't you wish your life was that good?
Beauty's only skin deep, people say
But so often
It's only skin that matters anyway
Superficial, yes
But how much of our lives is not?
Work so hard to get so thin
Beauty's on the inside, people say
You're so thin
There's not much room inside for anything
Barely enough
To keep your culturally-acceptable body alive.
Beauty on the outside
Crowds out anything within
And it's beauty on the outside
That matters.
