Monument bridge by Michael McDonald

Michael McDonald, Mount Mansfield Union, Grade 12, had this to say about his picture of Boston’s new bridge named after Leonard P. Zakim, the late executive director of the New England office of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith: “A monument should be made for a person who has done extraordinary things that have greatly altered the course of the future. Monuments should be made for those who have affected more people in the world in a good way than any other person, but monuments shouldn’t be made in the likeness of them. Monuments should be made in the form of what they have done. If a person of great magnitude has discovered, constructed, or done any sort of highly astute and amazing deed, we should construct a monument such as a building, a college, or a bridge to honor them and serve us in another great way. Because every time we cross paths or walk or drive over or under them we can think about those who have aided us, made it possible for us to have a better life.”
