The Key Lingering in my Hand
As my phone rings
I smile because it’s you
“Come to the woods,”
he demanded
I felt like my heart
Dropped to my stomach
As I rush out into the
Chilly April morning
Not even remotely thinking
About putting on a jacket or shoes
I ran for miles it seems like
As I reach to the edge of the woods
I slow down
Creeping in
Just a habit I guess
As I see a shadowy figure
I reach out
Whispering, “I missed you.”
No reply just dead silence
Once I appear into his eyes
“Sorry” leaves his lips
he hands me “The Key”
“The Key” that represented
That he owned my sacred heart
It was his
He promised me
He just didn’t take the key
He snatched my heart and soul
I never would have thought
Today would be the end
Of us
As he walks away with
No guilt, just shame
Once I lie across
The frozen ground wrapped up
In a ball
The key still lingering
In my hand
