We Were

When you say you miss what we had

who and what we were

What were we, exactly?

I'll tell you what we were

We were freshly cut grass

on suburban lawns

in the dead of the summer

the heat in the middle of July

We were rain

the kind of rain

you run out in

to find yourself again

the kind of rain you go out in

to clear your head

We were confusion

and hope

rebellion

and love

we were passion

and fury

and calm

all in one

except

we're not one person

but god, we were

we were siblings

and best friends

We were mountains

and valleys

meadows and hills

We were bumps

on the bike paths

we rode every day to get to school

Cracks in the sidewalk

everyone else avoided like the plauge

the ones they jumped over

Cracks in the sidewalk

we ran right over

on purpose

We were night and day

thunder and lightning

oil and water

salt and pepper

we were everything to me

Now we're gone.

Wow.

I really love this! The breaks in the sentences create just enough tension for the piece to be slightly choppy by not over the top breakage. (If that makes any sense.)

Really relatable for me, reminds me a lot of somehting I was involved with a while back.

thanks for writing!
