Two

Do you ever realize the little things?

Like how your eyelids flash over your eyes

leaving you with a moment of darkness?

Or how your tongue slowly moves forward

to lick your delicate lips?

Or maybe how your heart beats evenly

Against your caged in chest every so often?

I do.

I realize those little things.

The things everyone seems to forget.

I realize how your right heel glides out from under your body

trusting your weight to the other foot

while you push your right heel against the ground

relieving your left foot of the pressure.

I realize how your chest moves up and down

with each cautious breath,

and how your eyes search your surroundings

maybe even subconsciously searching for danger.

But watch out,

danger lurks around the corner.

Your eyelids will blind you

as your tongue becomes dry

unable to move

and your heart will beat two last times

when you realize your footing is lost

it will almost be too late.

One.

Your eyelids won’t permit you to see,

your heart with one last beat,

your tongue stays still.

Your eyes open.

Air rushes out of you.

Two.
