Letters In Grey

Before I met you,

I wrote to you,

and said

I love you.

Not knowing

The sound of your laugh

so big it can’t be held in

Not knowing the

plane of your chest,

more comfortable then

any other pillow.

Not knowing the blue

of your eyes

like the ocean I call yours.

I did not know you,

and laughed as I signed with a kiss

of pink lip gloss

still new and unused.

Years latter,

An ocean of time between us,

you read my words,

back to me

over the long line of wire

between

us and I fell for you more with

each word.

Now, I know

the sound of your sigh,

just before you fall asleep,

I know the

shape of your hands,

rough and yet more gentle

then any other

I know the color

of the skin in the hollow

next to your collar bone

the same color as the moonlight on sand.

I know you.

and now sign my letters,

no longer in the pale pink lip gloss

of my innocence,

nor the scarlet ink of our love,

but with the smudged

grey of graphite.

written and crossed out for fear

that my lip glossed dreams,

And scarlet yearning have bled through

my fingers tips.
