The Shadowed Heart

I sat in the light desert sand,
The hot wind playing with my hair,
I stared blankly at the stick in my hand,
I thought for a moment.
Then,
I drew my future,
My last hope.
The sun cast a dark shadow across my heart.
I was scared,
For me,
And for my family,
The wind picked up,
Whipping my hair across my closed eyes,
When I opened them again,
The heart I drew in the sand was gone,
I had no hope on the walk home that night,
I could not possibly explain to my parents what I was feeling right now,
No they wouldn’t understand,
World War II changed us all,
All I knew was,
I was going to be blown on forever in this nightmare.
Like the heart I drew in the sand.
