Dream

I had this dream last night
that I was making dinner
and he was standing next to me.
I was stirring sauce on the stove
and he was working silently
in that way he has
of not saying anything at all
when nothing needs to be said.
It was hot outside,
one of those summer evenings
when the crickets start to chirp
before it gets dark.
We were standing next to each other
in our bare feet
and our shoulders were touching.
He was so gentle
when he reached out and
pulled my hair out of the ponytail
so it fell loose against my back,
still wet from when we had gone swimming.
I turned and smiled up at him
and he smiled down at me.
I woke up and found myself
wishing for summer.

I completely agree with your other commenters - I love this poem. It is so clean and uncluttered...the words simply float off the page (screen, I guess) and drop us directly into that kitchen with you. Wonderful.
