You Thought You Knew

And even though you said you wanted it
You said so because you just wanted to want something but away your wants flit
For the sake of your own clarity and the sake of your own wit
You never said out loud that you did want it because
You thought you knew it was never what you wanted
You also thought you knew it would be forever what you want and
So why did you believe you could ever take it
Because you told yourself it was right and yet still you asked
What did you really want
And you always asked because
You never knew but you wanted so badly to find the slightest clue
You wanted to know but did not could not so you settled on what just seemed to be right for you
And tried to listen to your heart like they all say to
But it was speaking in a language you never knew
