Special Projects -- Overview

The Young Writers Project runs several special projects AND special opportunities for interested students each year. Here's a listing of some of the best of what we've done in the past.

Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival Blog. An energetic team of young writers attends and writes about the festival -- poems or stories or imaginings triggered by the music; observations; essays; interviews; collaborations. The festival, held at Elley-Long Music Center, began in 2009 and is led by the brilliant violinist Soovin Kim, and features some of the world's finest musicians.

SPECIAL PROMPTS

“MY LIFE” radio commentaries. YWP is partnering with Vermont Public Radio for an ongoing series for radio broadcast. We are looking for conversational stories or commentary on events or moments in your lives. Focus on one topic that engages you, where you feel you have something to say in which others would be interested.

Winter Tales

Winter Tales.

Each year we ask students to send us a story, poem or an essay about winter. They can focus on the holidays or the seasons -- the weather, the outdoors or the emotions. The work can be real or made up. Long or short.

The Future of Vermont Project

The Future of Vermont Project is a prompt created in partnership with the Council on Rural Development, the Council on Vermont's Future and Northfield Savings Bank. It includes cash awards and special presentations of student work -- over and above the normal publication of selected work in Vermont daily newspapers. Five essays will be selected for $100 awards and essays will be presented live in several settings to be announced later this year. Here is the prompt:

Vermont. Write an essay that answers any, some or all of these questions:

1.What does it mean to be a Vermonter?
2.What is the one thing you would change about Vermont?
3.If you could live here in 10 years, would you? Why or why not?
4.What is the most important thing to you about life in Vermont?

The young writers selected were Hannah Domas, Kestrel Grevatt, Ellie Blake, Bethany Sullivan, Colleen Shouldice and Cally Braun. Winter Tales -- DEADLINE FRIDAY

We have moved the deadline to FRIDAY Nov. 2.

WINTER TALES. This is the third year for this special partnership with the Vermont Stage Company whose professional actors give dramatic readings to students’ work in each of their Winter Tales shows in early December at FlynnSpace in Burlington. Take a listen to the sample above from Winter Tales '05; the piece was by Taylor Fargo of Westford and read by actress Kathryn Blume (sorry that the quality is not perfect.)
