Young Writers Project partners with 22 Vermont and New Hampshire newspapers to publish best student work once weekly throughout the school year. All the work printed in the newspaper, plus selections by our judges that could not fit onto the newspaper pages, is also published on this Web site.

To submit work for potential publication in one, some or all of the 22 newspapers partnering with YWP -- Addison Independent, Barton Chronicle, Brattleboro Reformer, Burlington Free Press (Hometown section), Caledonian Record, Charlotte News, Colchester Sun, Essex Reporter, Herald of Randolph, Hinesburg Record, Milton Independent, North Avenue News, Rural Route Today, Rutland Herald (and weekly Reader), St. Albans Messenger, Stowe Reporter, Times Argus (and weekly Extra), Valley News, Waterbury Record, Williston Observer.) You may send us general work done in school or at home, or you can send in responses to our weekly writing prompts.

The work can be fiction, non-fiction, essays, poetry -- any genre whatsoever. There is no limit on length, but we may have to excerpt longer pieces in the papers. (We'll publish full stories on the Web.) You must be from Vermont or greater Lebanon, N.H., to be eligible for publication in the newspapers.

All work submitted to this Web site for consideration for outside publication -- Newspaper Series, "My Life" Vermont Public Radio series, Winter Tales prompt with Vermont Stage Company -- is judged by student judges online under the guidance of Lee McIsaac, YWP's Newspaper Series coordinator. In evaluating submissions, judges look for pieces that stand out, have strong voice, fresh content and power. After the judges make their selections, Young Writers Project editors take the finalists into classrooms where final selections are made by other students. Read more »
