The Emperor's New Clothes

Ages ago, an Emperor did rule,

Whose richest desire was fair finery.

Two swindlers schemed to make the man a fool,

So claimed to weave magical drapery.

The Genesis of Dialect

A Sonnet for the Opposite Season

The leaves that sway in summer breeze are gone.

A chill has come and settled in the air.

The hills of green on which the sun had shone

have turned to brown, and shiver in dispair.

The birds that sang are silent in the trees.

Their nests have long since fallen to the ground.

And sleep, and burrow, to escape the freeze

that all the woodlands know will soon be found.

Grey clouds with whispery promises of snow

swirl gently through the neverending sky.

And sunset floats away and steals its glow

too early, letting darkness silence cries.

Though it is true that summer comes again

Winter guards his months well in his den.

Take Me Away

Another sonnet I wrote for my English class...

Take me away from this horrible place
where there’s hate and fear and anger and pain.
Take me away with your eyes and your face
to somewhere that there’s sunshine, not rain.
Take me into your warm, comforting arms
where nothing can touch me, nothing can hurt.
You’ve got me spellbound with all of your charms,
I want to hold you and kiss you and flirt.
Take me away on your sparkling cloud
into the sky, away from everything,
where just happiness can be heard so loud,
where there’s not a person whose words can sting.
Take me away to a beautiful place,
take me away with your beautiful face.

Drowning

A sonnet I wrote for my English class...

Sinking in the deep, you left me to drown,
and watched, smiled, as I choked and gasped for air.
You looked on as my pale body sank down
into the depths of your love -- so unfair.
You never wanted, never needed me;
you cast me aside. But I needed you.
I know it was easy for you to see
how much I clung to you. I know you knew.
Yet your words were like knives, cutting me deep,
your insults leaving scars and open wounds.
It was because of you I did not sleep,
haunted by the evil words that you crooned.
You hurt me, hurt me, and finally moved on,
And now, my love, I am forever gone.

Shakespeare & College

This is my first attempt at a sonnet...no idea what inspired me to write a SONNET (besides Shakespeare recently taking over my English class), but the theme is based around my annoyance at college applications for giving me limits for my writing supplements. Read more »

Roots of Time

Until the world beckons our swift return,
I'll sit with her beneath a sapling tree
Her arms conjoining perfectly to me,
As if our bodies never could adjourn.
To be forever one is what we'd yearn.
I'd wish that time would lack the skills to see,
So its restraints could break and set us free.
Yet we'd obey our clocks; their wills so stern.

Perhaps one day a riot to their crime,
Would cease our love's restriction to a day.
And when we've conquered every bit of time,
The roots around us would decide to stay
And grow into our bodies as they climb, Read more »

Star-Crossed Lovers

Lovely are the first moments together,
A lingering glance, quick heart, and warm blush,
Thoughts unpredictable as the weather.
People disappear, lights swirl, and sounds hush.
The first touch is tender and so light,
Full of tingle and gentle as a breeze.
Eyes look into eyes, which shine oh so bright,
And hope builds inside that time will just freeze.
Arms entwine, pulling bodies oh so close,
While heads and hearts hunger for each other.
Dancing, feeling, knowing that their love grows,
Never wanting to be with another.
Their first kiss is perfect but cannot last, Read more »

Against All Stereotypes

*Note: A story is told with alternating lines. One boy is pursuing an education, while his friends are working with the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

The schoolboy in Iraq is all alone.
His friends are ready to die for their cause.
His clothes made by his mother are all sewn.
His friends are ready to not need a pause.
He is getting a good education.
The friends are learning how to shoot a gun.
To help himself fit in a new nation.
One does not think those friends are having fun.
Full potential is the most important.
Suicide bombers, fifty-two have died. Read more »

Fearful Heartbeat

If ever I do perish in the night,
please take the mem'ries that we've held so dear
and bind them to the everlasting light
of promise I believed could leave me here

Don't hold me mad an instant that comes forth,
but stroke my death with loving sweet caress
The voice that whispers soft mine ear, goes hoarse
with tears I hoped would fall, I must confess

But now in time, these words must not apply
For here our youth remains a speckled hope
Our lips can touch today I am alive
and in your arms, there lies no need to cope

Such fear of mourning now turns dark and numb Read more »

Brother

Why are you instigating a fight? do you not realize
we've been a team since i first opened my eyes.
Each and everyday of my life its been you i idolize,
but now with this i wonder if it's all been lies.

I'm sure the constitution protects all citizens privacy,
and there's no reason you need to be reading my emails
so why the hell are you peering over my shoulder tryna see?
My personal life is mine you need not know the details.

You know I love you with all my heart,
Remember the good old days we'd party it up every payday,
But I know sometimes we need a little time apart, Read more »

Life

By Connor Renee LaFromboise
Chelsea Public School, Grade 10

The stress burns my brain like acid raindrops,
day after day I can hardly ever get away.
Friends and sleep are the only things that make the pain stop,
this journey called life confuses me in every way.

My elders made it through, they say I'll do fine,
but times are different, circumstances changed.
I constantly wonder if this life I live is fully mine,
and my grip on reality struggles to remain.

I work hard to keep my real emotions hidden,
for why should I worry others with my own issues. Read more »

freedom III

Sit here, still as the thinker, quite surrounds
An island under the blistering sun.
Sometimes, you wish you could get up and run.
No matter how you see it life confounds,
For every scrap of love, greater hate abounds.
No one guaranteed this life would be fun,
At this moment it is coming undone.
You try to speak but can’t make any sounds,
cry out for help, only hell answers back,
false promises and smiles, say “fly to me”
“I’ll give you it all, the shirt off my back!”
“Never a slave, you shall always be free,”
Ignore all the lies, his heart is coal black. Read more »
