Thinking Pole
Submitted by pianolady on Tue, 10/09/2012 - 2:54pmI sit with my back against the pole, thinking. About it all. I know I’m gonna have to get going again, but I don’t want to get back in the car. A police car speeds by and it jolts me out of my thoughts. I hope he didn’t see me. I get back in the car and slam the door. I take out my phone and dial a number that my fingers know so well, I don’t even have to think about it. He answers, and I say, “I’m coming now.”

A Perfect Fall Day
Submitted by LilyE27 on Fri, 10/05/2012 - 3:17pm
There is not a cloud in the sky.
Well, that’s a lie.
But almost the truth,
Almost isn’t enough.
I can see a blue mountain across the valley.
The trees are salted different fall colors:
Yellow, green, red and orange.
The old, rusty, speed limit sign supports my weight.
I can smell.
Fall, that’s what I smell.
Mud, the crisp fresh air.
A perfect fall day.

Dear Diary,
Submitted by KatjaS on Fri, 10/05/2012 - 3:11pmDear Diary,
My family which includes my dad, my mom, and my 2 little sisters are driving cross country. By the way, they are not the cute little sisters that you always dream about. They are annoying and always in your business. Anyways we are driving cross country for summer break. You would think with a family of five we would have a big car, but we don’t. We have a simple 5 passenger old white Chevy. That means that my sisters and I are in the back all squished together. We have been in the car for 4 hours already today and to me it looks like we have gone nowhere. We are driving through the desert today and to me all you can see is nothing, but my parents however think that it is amazing. All l they say is look over there or over there. When I do look (usually never) I never see anything. It all looks the same to me. My sisters and I are getting very hungry and tired and all we want to do is find a hotel and a restaurant. Whenever we ask my parents they say in a little while. Which was like 30 minutes ago. There haven’t been any road signs, so I don’t know how much longer it will be.
Two hours later…
Oh my gosh I just saw a sign that says hotel 10 miles away! I am so excited. I asked my dad to stop the car and I t take a picture of it because I am that happy. I have to go now because we have to check in and go to bed.
Bye until the next boring car trip

Home Coming
Submitted by 15smitlo on Fri, 10/05/2012 - 12:41pm
I look out to the horizon and see the mountains far off. I feel the breeze hitting me, going in all different directions. The autumn chill making me cold and shiver. The sun coming in and out thanks to the clouds rolling over head. I stand there for a long time, just watching everything around me. I feel safe and secure. I take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. The fresh, cold air going through my lungs and the smell of the nature around me makes me happy. This is familiar, this is home to me. I start to walk once again. I pass the old rusty sign and turn around to look at it. I read it over and over again and each time I do, it warms me to know where I am. I have been gone for so long that I am scared to go away again. I feel like if I do then I will forget about this place forever and lose everything I am.
My family is waiting for me, I know it. I can feel it. I look down the mountain, it is peaceful and quiet. The little town I love is sitting there just waiting for me to return. I start to run down the mountain towards the town ready to see what I have been missing for the past eleven years. I will be able to see my wife, my son, and my mother. I left when my son was only three years old to help serve our country. I can’t imagine how big he has grown. I wonder if he still remembers me or if he will be mad at me for leaving him for so long. I hope nothing has changed too much and that everything is well with them. If something tragic has happened I don’t know what I would do. Read more »

Alone
Submitted by lindsey.s on Fri, 10/05/2012 - 12:36pmDay in and day out I have been standing here silently watching the world whizz by. It is a lonely life. I stand here alone, the sun beating down on my spine and the rain running down my face. No one looks at me for more than a second, and when they do, they ignore me. I am a placeholder on this vast horizon. I have been polished and painted in the hopes that I will be noticed, but it is all for nothing. Nothing I do makes any difference. It’s been awhile since anyone bothered to make me feel special. There have been days when I see someone approaching and I find myself starting to hope that they have come to fix all of the broken pieces inside me, but I am unfixable. No one cares about one lonely street sign. Day in and day out I have been standing here silently watching the world whizz by.

The Crossing
Submitted by jpeterson on Fri, 10/05/2012 - 12:31pmOne morning close to Mount Mansfield Forest there was a turtle trying to cross the road. The thing was it was as hot as the Mojave desert. The road was very busy normally and was especially busy in the mornings. So the turtle everyday slowly tries to cross but always fails. He wanted to cross because on the other side was his home and a small pond. He was also very thirsty. So he tried to cross one last time. He had started to crawl across when all the sudden he heard a giant tractor coming. So quickly he crawled to the center of the road and at the last second the tractor came by and the turtle quickly hid in his shell and then the tractor barely touched his shell, he's safe and only has to cross on lane when all the sudden a speeding car comes zooming by and hits a sign that goes flying and hits the ground next to the turtle. Frightened he scury's to the middle of the next lane. He notices hes in the middle and tries to get to the other side as quickly as he can, and then a semi truck comes flying by...... On the other side, in his shell he waits with his eyes closed. He peeks his head out opens his eyes and thankfully walks back to his home, safely and carefully.

Nature's Rise and Fall
Submitted by TheDeppressedPi... on Fri, 10/05/2012 - 8:39am
I stare at the blue sky and the rolling green hills,
The change in the years to come gives me chills,
Will the birds have evolved into moles?
And dug hundreds of little holes,
To escape the thick green smog,
That hangs over us in a suffocating fog,
Will skyscrapers have replaced the trees?
And the fields resemble Swiss cheese?
Will vegetation become a myth?
Will the earth become drilled out to the pith?
Will it rain acid on our heads?
And the ozone be torn to shreds?
Will we pay any attention at all?
To natures rise and fall?
