Social media

Imagine if all social media -- Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc.  -- shut down. Would that be a good thing or a bad thing? How would it affect your life?

Vermont Writes Day is TODAY!

Seven minutes! Seven prompts! Give it a try!
Is your school participating? Get your teachers to give your class time to write for fun.

This is Young Writers Project's annual day of honoring writing -- a day when people of all ages in Vermont (and our friends in New Hampshire and around the country) take just seven minutes to write to seven fun prompts. You can participate on your own, or in class with fellow students and teachers; you can use pencil and paper, or write on one of our websites -- here (if you have an account; if you don't, be patient it may take a while for us to approve your account) or vermontwritesday.org which (no account needed) will open Thursday morning.

THE PROMPTS

Prez: Write a letter to the president. Tell him one thing you want him to do -- and why.

I am: Start or end a piece of writing with the phrase, "I am the one who ... ", to describe who you are, what you love, what you dream of, etc.

Social media: Imagine if all social media -- Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc. -- shut down. Would that be a good thing or a bad thing? How would it affect your life?

Kindness: What's the nicest thing a stranger has done for you?

Write awful: Use cliches, mixed metaphors, tense changes, whatever you're not supposed to do when you write an essay.

Invisible: Write about a time when you felt completely invisible, literally or figuratively.

Turn around: You answer your phone and a voice whispers, "Turn around..." What happens?

And -- as always -- General writing is welcome. Write about anything you like!

(Hashtag it #vtwrites18 to let us know it was written for Vermont Writes Day!)

Phone Calls and Footsteps

The phone rang loudly. I got up to answer it, when I heard footsteps on the back porch. It was probably just a cat, I thought. It sounded a little heavy for a cat, but I just shrugged it off.

The phone was still ringing, oddly enough. I picked it up, not saying a word in case it was a robo call. At first, silence, then I heard footsteps on the porch again, and on the phone the same footsteps. Then, in a low voice, "Turn around..."

I was frozen in place. I couldn't move. I heard the sliding glass door open. I didn't dare turn around. Then, I heard multiple voices...

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"

Close Your Eyes

Turn around
Close your eyes
Picture yourself standing in the middle of your imagination!
Take a deep breath
What does it smell like?
Now open your eyes
Where are you?
Stay there for a second
What do you see?
Use your imagination!

Less Social Media, More Positives

What would happen? What if we didn't have social media? No Instagram or Snapchat? Even Facebook! Would people still use phones? So many people now have so many social media apps, and that's how they use up most of their time. When someone uses social media, many things could happen, such as bullying, mean behavior, and suicide. This is all horrible. But think would would happen if we couldn't communcate that way. There would be less wasted time, bad behavior, abuse, and so much more. Also, there would be more activity like sports or general exercise. Since people are now on social media so much, they get much less exercise than someone without a phone.

The Best Day

"Brrrringg brrrrinnggg!" my phone rang. I grabbed it out of my pocket and a voice, very deep answers my phone.
"Turn around..." the voice said.
I was scared. I though that this was the end, you know? This is exactly how a horror movie starts.
I felt my feet slightly move. My head turned. "Lindsey!"
"Maya!"
"OMG, I can't believe you're here!" Lindsey was my best friend from my old school. We hugged. "I haven't seen you in forever!"
"I know!" Maya said.
This is the best day of my life!

I Am

I am the one who will be the best, stay the best, and never be the worst. I will always be passionate about my sport. I will keep my head held high even when times are rough. No tear will roll down my cheek until an Olympic medal hangs around my neck. I will never quit. "Quit" won't ever be part of my thoughts. As my best friends quit, I will stay. I will make friends with the others who are passionate. I am the one who will count by the wonderful moments in life, not by the years, months, weeks, or days.

Dear President

Dear President,

I want there to be no money in the United States. People are too greedy. If there was no money, we would help each other.

Be Open to the World

What if all social media was shut down? It would be a good thing and a bad thing.

It would be a good thing because then not everyone would be addicted to their screens and notice the world around them. Now, I'm not saying you're a bad person if you have electronics.

It would affect me because I do like to use social networks, but I don't rely on it, so it wouldn't affect me much. If I was older, I think it would affect me more.

Even if technology didn't shut down, I think we should be more open to the world around us.

To My Surprise

My phone rings. I answer.
A small and soft whisper said, "Turn around..."
I thought for a moment and I decided to turn around.
To my surprise, a man was holding a sack and he threw the sack over me.
I could tell I was in a car because we were hitting bumps.
The man stopped.

A Skatepark for Killington

Hi, I'm Matthew from Killington Elementary School.

I like to skateboard. We don't have any local skateparks besides Flipside in Rutland, VT. I think there should be a skatepark in Killington because there are a lot of snowboarders that like to skateboard and Killington has the space for it. I think there should be a fundraiser for it.

I heard a rumor that they were going to build a Woodward at Pico, but I don't think that was true. If it is, it would be awesome!

Vudu

There was once a black cat named Vudu. She had fur as black as night, eyes as yellow as the sun, and paws as white as the stars.

"Hello?" Vudu mewed. Where am I? Vudu pondered. She took a glance at her surroundings. She was in a lush wintery forest, that was magical and warm. The wind started to howl...

"You must find an old friend you won't remember..." the mysterious voice trailed off in the wind.

"Hello?" Vudu meowed.

Hockey Star

I am the one who really wants to be a professional hockey player,
But not just on the women's hockey team.
I want to play with the boys,
But they don't let women play in the NHL.

Someday I will change that.
