The Note
Submitted by thedragon on Fri, 02/01/2013 - 8:54pmI was walking along the beach on Cape Cod when I noticed a blue glass bottle that had just washed up on the sand. I picked it up and saw a note inside. I tried to pull it out but it was at the bottom of the bottle. I stared at it and got an idea. I brought the bottle up on the porch of our house and dropped it. It didn't break. I looked around, grabbed a stick and poked around inside the bottle. I used it to drag the note up the side. I unfolded the note and read it. It said:
2 cups of saltwater
3 tablespoons of sand
1/2 teaspoon of sugar
Well, that's weird, I thought. Maybe it's a good recipe? I ran down to the beach, got the sand and and dumped it in a bowl. I ran to get some ocean water and then I went inside. My sister (still half asleep) stomped down the stairs.
"What on earth are you doing?" she snapped.
"Making something," I replied.
She glared at me and went back upstairs. I put the sugar in and stirred. Then I poured the revolting mixture down my throat. It tasted like seaweed and dead fish. My insides churned like boiling lava. I closed my eyes and threw up all over the stove. I gasped. Read more »

At Midnight
Submitted by Samiam on Sat, 12/15/2012 - 11:20pmSing to me,
and with each note
your voice strokes,
I become a little sadder
because it is painfully beautiful.
Those words were
riding bareback on a
horse
galloping in the foam
of the sea
at midnight.
Those sounds were
the training coming into the station;
the final stop of the night,
picking up all of the people
that belong
somewhere else
at midnight.
Especially the girl with the
sad eyes,
looking scared as the
train sighed,
pulling into the station
at midnight.
Those feelings were
the girl diving backwards
off the boardwalk
into the ocean
that no longer roared.
The pulsing silence
in her ears
became louder
as she held her breath
at midnight.
Sing to me,
and with each note
your voice strokes,
I become a little sadder
because you are resurrecting phantoms
I thought my soul had forgotten
at midnight.

Teeth of the Storm
Submitted by Vazrtre on Tue, 01/10/2012 - 5:12pmThe waves crash unmercifully
Upon the glass-ridden shore
The ocean wolves howl
And tear frothing at the air
They crash furiously
Against the craggy rocks
Sending up plumes
Of ocean spray
The wind shrieks and wails
Hounding on the storm.
A ship rides the waves
Plunging and yawring
Timbers creaking
Trying to heed
The flash of the island
And fight the teeth of the storm

Saltwater Therapy
Submitted by tangerinesunset on Wed, 05/19/2010 - 9:22pmSaltwater therapy
infused my soul with
curiosity to imagine again,
and sent me drifting upwards
in a watery dome,
where light
and darkness
couldn't be distinguished.
My tired toes
cautiously reached out
to calm the raging foam's
cantankerous wrath,
only to be purified
by racing ivory bliss.
My flying wisps of hair
launched themselves into
an abyss of seaweed
and sunshine,
harassed by the scent,
but welcomed by the radiance.
The timeless breeze
formed a choir
with nearby dune grasses,
as waves sprinted up the shore,
escaping from the whispering sea. Read more »

Summer of the Tidalwave
Submitted by tangerinesunset on Mon, 05/17/2010 - 3:56pmReoccurring ripples
Playfully crawl up
The glass-smooth shore,
Briefly teasing the tender earth
With a phrase of foam,
Then soaking away,
Shy like a child
On the first day of kindergarten
Slipping down into a colony of waves
Hiding from the daunting dune
Contently watching another one try
To tackle the beast of land,
Without success, too
But a watery revolution builds
Miles away
In the eternal horizon
Of ocean and sky
The promising distance
Soon becomes
Within swim-area fury,
It mounts the wind
And collects all force,
Riding a soul of saltwater bravery Read more »

The Far Western Shore
Submitted by Shira on Sat, 04/24/2010 - 8:06pmI will cross the storm-tossed sea for the far western shore
With sails unfurled my ship will chase the endless, turquoise sky
And though I long to see your face, I know I will no more.
Go stand upon the craggy cliffs, beyond the tangled moor
Whisper, “Farewell,” in the breeze, and heave for me a sigh
For I will cross the storm-tossed sea for the far western shore.
None but seabirds follow me, as in the clouds they soar,
Only I can voyage on, while I may weep and cry,
And though I long to see your face, I know I will no more. Read more »

Ocean
Submitted by Steven Lindemann on Fri, 03/19/2010 - 2:27pmWaves are washing in and out,
Water is spurting from a distant whale spout.
There are fishes swimming everywhere in their quiet, calm home, the sea.
That’s were they were born, where they came to be.
For they have lived there all of their lives, diligently.
There are beautiful wonders everywhere,
Over here and under there.
There are beautiful colors and sights you’ll adore.
There are amazing and wonderful places, galore!
Waves are washing in and out,
From this quiet, calm home, the sea.
Blue
Submitted by epentaleri on Tue, 03/09/2010 - 9:56amIt was the most brilliant shade of blue i have ever seen. When I was on my porch I was looking out at the sunset, seeing the ocean and the dolphins. Then I went inside and saw the second most brilliant shade of blue. It was a bowl. It was light enough and dark enough. It was perfect. That is my story about the color blue

Four Pounds
Submitted by tangerinesunset on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 10:32pmi.
The four-pound newborn girl
reaches a miniscule fist
into the pastel pink atmosphere
of her nursery.
Innocent,
and already fighting.
ii.
the four-year-old
escapes fleetingly
into the meadow.
Skyscraping grasses
and aquamarine heavens
tower over.
She gets lost in the labyrinth
purposefully.
iii.
fourteen
years old,
she lets
the serene
salt breeze
bless her.
And she walks along
the shore,
one
last
time.
iv.
the crying ocean
sings
by her
stone grave.
Bitter Sea
Submitted by megdempsey on Thu, 12/24/2009 - 11:17amBitter sea,
please silence these emotions
and let me taste that salty sleep
drowning into ocean deep
My heavy heart will be the weight
That carries me to earthly fate
Down, far down, I'll sink unbound
Yet won't float back for one more sound
Instead, I'll hear a seahorse neigh
And hear the jokes the clown fish say
Laughing, while the water moves
down my throat, the salty blue
gently filling up my lungs
to wash the air right off my tongue
And then I'll know it's time to pray
a goodbye song to all this pain
Goodnight to stars that shine like day Read more »

Ocean Eyes
Submitted by megdempsey on Thu, 12/24/2009 - 11:06amAlone at night, I dream of you
So close to me in rest
I see the ocean in your eyes
I sink into your chest
Like waves, I hear your heart beat rise
And crash into the tide
Dizzy with sweet joy of Love
I feel you at my side
And you will never let me drown
I trust the strength you hold
Your gaze intoxicates my heart
Please swim within my soul.
Oh, swim and read my every thought
I'll drift into your arms
Kiss me under water's shield
And claim me with your warmth.
Oh, let me surf your ocean eyes
And let me taste the salt
Upon your tongue, my fearless name Read more »

Going Out To Sea
Submitted by epentaleri on Mon, 11/30/2009 - 11:40amGoing out to sea
By Spencer Hurlburt
Vergennes Elementary School, Grade 3
I hear seagulls squawking and squealing while I sit by the ocean. The waves crash over the sand as silent crabs crawl into the small tide pools, with waters so warm they feel like a hot tub. It is early in the morning, so early fog clouds drift overhead like ghosts. Sailboats drift upon the waves, bumping up and down like cars on a muddy road. Read more »
Place I Love
Submitted by brittanyhoyt on Fri, 09/25/2009 - 12:58pm Place I Love
By: Brittany Hoyt
I’m laying in the sand the warm sun is hitting my body.
Soaking up all the sun I can get before I leave.
The palm trees are swaying.
While I’m walking on the beach I see the jelly fish washed up on the shore.
Little kids making sand castles.
The heat is burning my skin.
I go in the water.
I jump in my eyes burn, there’s sand in them.
I walk up on the peer.
Tourists gather to feed the birds.
I stand on the reeling and put my arms out like I’m on the Titanic.
Winds blowing throw my hair.
Smell of the salt water. Read more »
Silence is a Great Healer

Ode to the Ocean
Submitted by vtsmith on Wed, 06/10/2009 - 4:04pmOde To The Ocean
Your rough surface,
Glittering in the setting sun,
Like a flame dying down to ashes,
When the wood runs low.
Waiting for your flame to ignite again,
In the morning,
Like being reborn.
Your rough surface,
Holding so much life,
An almost infinite amount,
A beautiful palace of wonderful things,
Filled with exotic animals,
Dying to be seen.
Your rough surface,
So deep and blue,
So mysterious,
And holding
So much wonder.
Earth's last frontier,
The land beneath the waves,
The kingdom uninhabited by humans.
Your rough surface,
So amazingly beautiful,
So amazingly deadly,
So amazingly unpredictable,
So amazingly gentle.
Your waves,
Their force unimaginable,
Their energy unending,
Their destruction disastrous,
Their lapping rhythm so soothing.
Your rough surface,
With its dark waters,
Which hold so many secrets,
Not to be revealed,
But even yet,
Having your limits tested,
Your patience coming to an end.
Our destructive race, Read more »
An Ocean Away
Submitted by tangerinesunset on Mon, 05/25/2009 - 6:13pmI miss you
why?
I shouldn’t
you choose to leave
swept away by the tide
and I was at the shore
watching, salty tears in my eyes
a sailboat wandered to take you home
I was sailing it
a life ring appeared to rescue you
I threw it
a lighthouse cast a glow to guide you back
I was in its tower
waiting
but the current overtook you
and I still wait with my toes in the sand
they scorch with my sadness
but the water cools me down
hope in liquid form
I am the north star
follow me home

Submitted by hope morningstar on Mon, 03/02/2009 - 7:41pmi am floating
bobbing falling
filling emptying
loosing myself
becoming something new
rewind
play again
constant cycle of chaos
crash
heavy waves spray white
crack
i am broken
a piece of me floats west
another circles
caught in a whirlpool
suddenly i am whole
yet not the same
super-glued together
like a patchwork quilt
this new existance
thrown back together
is worse than none at all
at least when you are nothing
you are nothing as a whole
