Vacation challenge

OK, so someone sent me this link and I honestly was flabbergasted. I'm not sure whether video can inspire you to write, but here goes. Watch this, then write about it; tell us what it made you think about, create a story, write a poem, whatever. Do it in the comment section so we can see everyone's creations. The challenge, of course, is this: Can you keep up with an elephant?

Joshua and His Crayon

Katie O'Donnell
Oxbow High School, Grade 11

Joshua is six years old. He is missing his two front teeth and he speaks with a lisp. He always carries a green crayon in his fist. Joshua lives in his own world. If he was older people would think he was crazy. Joshua always recreates things from real life onto his papers.
One day Joshua decided that he would go for a walk. He traveled through the woods. Trees surrounded both sides of the road. Joshua began to see things. It was getting close to his bedtime, so he squinted his eyes and continued walking forward. All of a sudden 20 of them appeared, big-eyed elephants with long and skinny tails. Joshua was perhaps more excited than he ever had been before. Earlier that day, Joshua had gone on a walk with his mother. She took him through the park and pointed out 20 different types of flowers. Joshua wasn't that interested. This time, however, it was Joshua's story.

Nothing rhymes with orange

When in school you learn
Purple elephants don’t burn

Well one sunny day
I believe it was in May,

Or maybe it was in June,
I was listening to a tune

Walking down the street
Looking at all types of feet

I saw something that caught my eye
As I passed it by

It was a foot
It was not covered in soot

I looked up to see
What in the world could it be?

What I saw could not be described
This poem can no longer rhyme
Because what I saw
Was a purple elephant
And everyone knows
Nothing rhymes with
Purple elephant
And before I finish,
I must say
When this purple elephant came my way
I noticed that it did indeed
Unlike we read...
Have a burn

African Adventure

My Favorite Place to Go

When I travel, I like to go somewhere I have never been before because the world is an amazing place and I want to learn all about it. I have been to Canada, Europe, Iceland, many US states, and last but not least Kenya and Tanzania. My favorite trip was definitely to Africa. I went to Africa in 2006, my fourth grade year. The trip was not only fun, but it was educational, culturally diverse, and was great for seeing a different biome from the temperate forest.

Earth and Sky

Earth and Sky

By Emily Lyman
Mater Christi, Grade 4

The sky
is made for light things
the ground
for heavy
The sky carries
swift winds
and birds
with feathered wings
and golden or silver light
that dances down
to the earth below

The land carries
slow-moving elephants
and two-legged people
It carries
green plants and blue water

Without the land there would be no sky
