The Bright Red Bench

The smell of bagels and chocolate pastries floated in the air, almost out of a cartoon show, from the bakery next door. The bright red bench I was sitting on was newly polished. The air was hot and humid for a summer day and I was about to burst with excitement. There were three flies buzzing around me, my legs were stiff from the five-hour car ride and it was getting hotter by the minute. The sun’s rays of light were making it harder to see but when she came around the corner, none of it seemed to matter. She kept walking totally unaware that I was sitting on the bright red bench next to her favorite bakery-- I called her name and she looked around, pulling up her sunglasses onto her head, and then she saw me. As if everything in the world froze we ran at one another wrapping each other into a tight hug, squealing and laughing. I knew the summer heat wouldn’t be so bad.

Her Smile

Her smile made the world light up
I sat on the bright red bench waiting
The air was hot and humid
I was about to burst with excitement

I sat on the bright red bench waiting
The sun’s beams shining earth
I was about to burst with excitement
I called her name

The sun’s beams shining earth
We wrapped each other in a tight hug
I called her name
Everything froze

We wrapped each other in a tight hug
The air was hot and humid
Everything froze
Her smile made the world light up
