So old

Do you know what
it was like to see your city
crumble to your feet?
I was so young,
We were so young.
Did you hear their
screams wrapping through
the air, even when
they had faded
long ago?
I was so young,
We were so young.
Do you remember
the boat against the waves,
smugglers trying to get us away,
I was so young,
We were so young.
Do you see the
eyes of those around you,
those windows to the soul,
Our eyes are still young,
But our souls so terribly old.

I am

I am of strong wind
and the prayers of the mosque carrying
on the breeze
I am of grandmothers cookies and her feasts
and her loving words from
another language
so beautiful to my ears.
I am of falls in bursts of colors,
I am of the kittens in grandmothers garden
of a crazy cat loving aunt,
I am of the stubble on baba's
cheek and the
soft kisses of maman
I am of my grandfathers,
one a businessman who
hugs me tight,
and one that rocks me back and forth,
sings softly in my ear,
the summer evenings with the
samovar bubbling and the uncles
joking back and the forth,
and the music that the people
laugh and dance and clap to,
the political debates that you sit and listen to
as a child, not knowing that meaning.
I am all these things and more
I am to worlds and in between
I am.

The Stories Untold

Hear the story of
a little boy was of a garden that was
filled with fruit and plants,
with his grandparents,
Inside a safe haven that
had a wall surrounding
but one day the little boy with his mother looked
outside the garden gate,
and saw the tanks rolling through the street
outside.
Hear the story of a little girl who
knows the story
of bombs shaking the ground she lived on
and moving far away so she could
no longer
feel the trembling of the earth
and feel the fear
Hear these stories
because they are resounding
Hear these stories because they are repeating
Hear them so we might learn from our mistakes,
Hear them so we dont
run away

Infinity

Infinity is the number of
stars in the sky.
Infinity is the number of
aches in my heart.
Infinity is the number of
ticks of the clock.
Infinity is the number of
thoughts in my brain.
Infinity is how long the
universe goes on.
Infinity is the number of
nights you stare at the dark,
until you realize that
Infinity is a promise.
