poem challenge: Red
hannah.banana23's picture

in the crayon box

red is the color scribbled all over me when i see injustice that i want to change
red is not passive but loud and demanding to be shown to the world
red is the color of menstruation, it makes an apperance with no advance warning
red is the color of the little guy in my head: anger

orange is the color of brilliant sunrises and sunsets that you catch if you're lucky
orange is tinged with summertime
orange is clementine, my walker
orange is my family's favorite creamsicle

yellow is the most frequented gal in my head
yellow is the color of joy
yellow is my friends and family, a new favorite show, a horseback riding lesson, taylor swift's music
yellow is our light source, the beautiful sun

green is disgust and envy
green is the people in my past
green is the lush forests and tress and surface on which dandelions grow
green is my favorite shade of nail polish

at the balls

glittering chandeliers twinkle greetings from above
ballrooms aglow with smiles of the regency's finest,
and only the most observant see miss daphne bridgerton bump into the duke.
only the most observant go from ball to ball and watch this story unfold like the pages in a romance novel.
no one sees the words sopken in the rain or the moments looking at art
but all know that these two are enthralled with each other.

the way they dance and it looks like they're floating
eyes only fixed on each other
whispered words exchanged and
an unladylike laugh from daphne
no one hears "we should call each other by our names,"
but everyone sees how close they are
no one hears "it is you i cannot sacrifice"
but everyone sees simon begin to soften and
let people in.

and then there are the moments that no one hears or sees
moments that are simon and daphne's alone:

where we went wrong

every day i wait
anxious to see if another person of color was murdered.
as white people we are brought up knowing that the police can help us, that they can keep us safe.
black people are brought up being told what to do if they get pulled over for no reason at all.
our country, this system has been failing people of color for decades.
all we talk about is how america is great,
but how great are we if we continually do things like this?
why is history whitewashed when there's so much more under the surafce?
why is not everyone talking about this
standing up,
raising voices,
why are more people not angry?
why are people not recognizing our privellege as a white majority is white supremacist system?
this, i believe, is where we went wrong.

to the young people who are as frustrated as i am,
thank you.
keep raising your voices,
disrupting status quo,
making change.
i see you.

poem challenge: George Floyd
hannah.banana23's picture

i breathe for those who can't

i breathe for those who can't.
i breathe for Emmett Till
Breonna Taylor
George Floyd
Ahmaud Arbery
Jamel Floyd
Sean Monterrosa
and millions more.
i breathe for those who have been killed for the wrong reasons
i breathe for those who didn't get a full life
i breathe because i have white skin
and that is unfair beyond words
i am able to walk down the street and not worry for my life
i am able to go into stores and not get suspicious looks
i don't have to worry about
getting someone's knee
pressed
into
my
neck.
this is why black lives matter.

high school...

i sit in a circle next to kids i know but it feels like i don't
nervousness is practically electric in this room
new freshman
unsure of our new classes but also confident because, high school
wow
can't believe i've gotten so far
feels so new
these are kids i've grown up with but they feel like strangers
especially on this first day
and heck, on the first week
but ya know, it's gonna be okay
i'll have art & french and chorus
everything i love
i'll find my way and i'll kick butt in high school

a letter from earth

dear human,
i implore you
don't forget about me in a couple hundred years
when you have the technology to fly halfway around the world in one click
don't forget about me
when you have so much to do
that you forget about caring for the place you live in
and put more pounds of plastic in the ocean than fish
don't forget about me
the planet that gave you air to breathe
food to grow
a place to live

don't forget about me when i
am in such bad shape that it's too late
to help me recover
alert the authorites
keep protesting and marching and chanting
don't forget about me
love,
your mother (earth)

what we used to do

a long time ago
we used to be able to go shopping without masks or gloves
we used to be able to give really good hugs
to people that weren't only in our family
we used to go to school
and complain about homework and teachers and drama
we used to look forward to large gatherings
of more than 10 people
we used to buy tickets to broadway shows
that we thought we'd actually get to see
i used to count down the days to when i'd get on a plane
to austin, texas to see a movie i was in
premire on a huge screen
we used to daydream about summer camp
and swimming in a neighbor's pool
and we didn't have to worry about sitting six feet away
from our best friends
we used to be able to travel to exciting places
and get ready for preformances with anticipation
i miss all the things we used to do

a tale of epic proportions

they finally lifted the carona lockdown!!!
so i called my friend kami
and said "let's go on a road trip"
she said yes
we packed the car
and drove hours and hours
felt like eternity
we FINALLY got our hotel in nyc and got tickets for all the shows we're gonna see
mean girls came first
we almost got lost on the subway and almost stepped in a pile of old gum
but nevertheless
we got there on time
we got to meet my idols
and hug them!!
which, by the way, i haven't done in MONTHS
then beetlejuice
but
we DID get lost on the subway this time
thank god we just barely made it
to see the curtain rise

the trip

i stand with my walker
my toes sink into soft sand
feel the water lap at my feet
sandcastles slowly wash away
as the sky turns the colors of the rainbow
and the sun sinks lower
peaceful just the sound of the water
constant and comforting

i stare at the expanse of water stretching out before me
seems endless
but i know it leads somewhere
if i were to travel on a boat in a bottle
where would i go?
drifted along by the steady current
eventually deposited somewhere new
it would be a vacation
no, more like
an adventure
