The skeleton and the girl

The skeleton fell hard for the girl
Who breathed sweet air and felt the tickle of grass on the soles of her
Feet
The skeleton ran a finger down her ribs
Listening to the xylophone pings
The girl watched the skeleton waltz down the cobbled streets at night
Making a beautiful, strange symphony of plinks and cracks and whistles
And imagined her bones in her calloused hands
She envied the girl who didn't trudge to the water
Every morning
Just at nine
And let the wind play race around her fibula
And sun shine through her eye sockets
The skeleton girl who could never get cold
In the house with the leaky roof when it rains
The skeleton watched the girl run sun-kissed hands
Through flat hair
And imagined what it would be like to run her metacarpals through locks
Without tugging and getting caught in cracks and snapping off little peices
She watched the girl bring cupped hands of spring water to her mouth and drink
Not even a drop spilling onto her frock
And the girl peered as she swallowed at the skeleton
Who shone
Even in the moonlight
And when one caught the other's eye shyly on a winter morning
The other smiled back

It was just a fluke that I happened to see

The ghost of a girl in 1893

I didn't think much of her, tried to ignore

But then she came 'round in 1894

A spirit was not something that I had wanted

Did you know that, when you wrote me, I was made of papercuts

That I was ink and glue and wax but mostly, I was papercuts

Did you know that, when you read me, I am made of memories
