masked

I don't                                                                                           normally
like masks.                                                                                   To
me, they make no sense. Why
                                                                                                    pretend
to be someone you
aren't?
                                                                                                     Is
it
simple? Is it
                                                                                                     hard?
How would I
know? But as I've
grown older as we all do
sooner or later, I've learned
that sometimes masks are
important. Sometimes,                                                                you
have to                                                                                        create
a mask over your face so no one sees the
                                                                                                    swirling
emotions of
rage,
depression,
hopelesness,
and fear
inside you. Sometimes you have to                                            paint
a mask                                                                                        over your face
                                                                                                    so
no one can see the
ugly beauty beneath. Sometimes
you have to wear a mask so                                                       no one
can
see your eyes and                                                                      will  know
your darkest secrets. I wear
too many masks to count; I
don't want to. But I
have to.                                                                                      Your pain
is my pain; let's
pretend it doesn't exist
together.

may you visit us during autumn, the eldest of the seasons

letting your fragile bones be exposed to the crisp air of october

letting your fingertips run over the bars of the cemetery gates

your eyes would hold the world
