Drowning, a metaphor

You can't breathe while you're underwater
People who haven't
Drowned
Tell me that
All
The
Time.
I know Susan.
So why not pull yourself out?
They say
Why continue to drown?
At the very beginning
When you could have Pulled Your Self Out?
What people who haven't drowned
Don't understand is
There's a pull to the sea
There's a rocking of the tide
But it's so cold!
They Cry
What they don't know is
The coldness is comforting
It's a fire in the middle of winter
It's too much spice in a plate of potatoes
It's not the calm, slowly tearing you down, silently
It is the storm
It's struggling while every muscle in your body aches and
Your eyes tear up and
Your soul begs you to swim up and breathe
That is better than not struggling
Lying broken in the sand
While the waves lap around you
Breathing, but barely

It was just a fluke that I happened to see

The ghost of a girl in 1893

I didn't think much of her, tried to ignore

But then she came 'round in 1894

A spirit was not something that I had wanted

Did you know that, when you wrote me, I was made of papercuts

That I was ink and glue and wax but mostly, I was papercuts

Did you know that, when you read me, I am made of memories
