senses

if I had to give up one of my senses
it would be my sense of balance
I don't have much of one anyway
but never taste
I don't think I would ever smile again if I couldn't taste my grandmother's homemade soups
never touch
I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't feel my mother's hugs
never smell
I refuse to give up that sharp rustic fall smell, the smell of freshly chopped wood and maple leaves
never sight
I would rather lose an arm than not be able to see your sweet moonbeam of a face
never hearing
without music I would lose my sanity altogether
(not that there's to much to lose)
never my sense of being
I question it every day, I don't need any less of it.
and I'd never give up emotions
cause when you think about it
those are senses to
you can sense what a person is feeling
and you can use your feelings to understand them.
just as you can use your sense of smell
to understand they need a shower.
badly.
so out of all those things,
I'd rather lose my balance.
than lose anything else.
and now you know why.

    Looming over your shoulders

Each stack higher than its former

    Every thought and every scrap

Of an idea too scared to ponder

    Every moment that hurt

    Each minute that lingered longer

  • Inadequacy

How do I push the words out
    From behind my taffy tongue
    Thick with salty tears
    And full of grubby thumb

    I’m a child
    Pretending that I’m numb
    To escape the overwhelming feelings

    Why

When feet fall soft but quick

    Does the hallway extend

And the hot breath of whoever’s behind me feel hotter

Why do I stay pressed to the wall

    Like a stubborn gruby sticker
