The Problem With Sophie Turner's Juul

It isn’t news that Sophie Turner is extremely attached to her Juul. Dozens of paparazzi pictures feature Turner clutching her vape, taking puffs behind the scenes of GOT, and most recently, crying real tears in Dark Phoenix, all thanks to her director taking her Juul away. However, Turner’s fixation to her Juul sends a distressing signal towards teens, as the media's stance on vaping is especially influential to young, impressionable children. Even more concerning is the message sent out by many popular media outlets - which youth are all easily exposed to - portraying Turner in a light that almost promotes the use of e-cigarettes.

The normalization of vaping—especially within celebrities that appeal towards teens, attractive marketing campaigns, and social media endorsements—are the driving force behind the skyrocketing number of teen e-cigarette users in the past few years. What’s troublesome is that many teens don’t realize the adverse health risks of nicotine: from a health perspective, the dangers of e-cigarettes are just being uncovered. Addiction, DNA damage, an increased risk of diabetes, lung and heart diseases, and cancers are only some of the threats associated with vaping. As far as teen logic goes, if their favorite celebrities are using the product, why shouldn’t they?

In fact, on December 18, 2018, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a new advisory, the fourth in ten years. The new generation’s infatuation with the latest trend was officially declared an epidemic.
