The Harvest Moon

As the days fade from September and into October
so the leaves fade from the trees
which is to say
sometimes tearing away with a gust of wind
other times trickling away slowly
like a faucet that never stops completely
still it drips, drips, drips.

as the leaves fade, the apples ripen
the pumpkins swell up into their orange skins
the weather cools, the sun hides his face more and more.

but his sister the moon, oh, is she friendly!
she sends us well wishes with a blood red smile
as she gazes over the thriving trees

we are entering her domain, Autumn
swelling moon, shining moon, fading moon
maiden, mother, crone.
