Sugarcoated Words

marshmallows cracked black

with gooey innards showing like majestic guts

sickly sweet and soft like a lullaby

drawing me in with the promise of joy

just like those young, childhood dreams saturated in sugar

that have slowly melted away into a cavity of spun time.

our teeth ache from our sugarcoated words,

arms slick with sweet goo, syrup running down our wrists like warm blood,

we spin fables with our chocolate-laden lips, sugar drips from our mouths like lipstick

but these sweet, cookie words don’t hold their weight
