Gazing

“Gazing”, is an acrylic painting. I used the impasto technique, as well as a glazing technique. "Gazing" is a portrait in a graphic style. I started my painting with the background in a loose black. Then I went over the black with a very dark red to show the heat in the air. After I worked on the background, I started the fire and that was my hardest part. I struggled with making the fire splatter onto the background. I ended up using washes of colors and splattering the paint onto the background. I chose three colors and added them on thickly, showing the bright spots in the fire and the darker spots behind. Lastly, I painted myself and Tristan in black. I painted us last because I wanted the viewers to understand we were in front of the fire.
