All My Words Know You

You appear
In everything I write
I can never escape
Your smile
You face
Your hair
Your eyelashes

I see you
Tiny pieces of you
Stuck in between the letters in the words that I scratched onto the surface
Of paper your fingers will never know
You're stuck in the back of my head

Living in the crevices of my mind

You have never read what I wrote
But all of it knows you
All my words would recognize you
If they met you on the street
All my words know you
Almost as well I wish I did

I memorized your face
Your features
The way you walk
Your smile
And the way you look at me
The way I feel when you look at me
I memorized it all

You appear in every story
Every poem
You good qualities
And your bad

I enjoy being in the same room
With you
I enjoy listening to your voice
I enjoy the look on your face when you listen to mine
I enjoy the color of your eyes
Green and grey and blue and brown
All wrapped up
Tightly as you are
In my eyes

I want to protect you
From the cruel world that threatens us all
I want to shield your body with my own
I want to keep you safe and warm
And full as I feel
When I look at you looking at me
For a second too long

Your eyelashes are in every story
Your walk in every poem
Your smile in every song

I can never escape you when I write
And for now
At least
I don't really want to
