A Winter Nap

A Winter Nap

By Amelia Machanic

Close by a flickering fireplace

Lies a dog,

His soft curls damp

With morning activities

In the pillowy snow.

He curls into a ball

Like a hibernating bear

Ready to rest.

He yawns

His head bobbing slightly back and forth,

His hazelnut eyes and long eyelashes

Slowly closing

Into a peaceful sleep

Until

pitter-patter-pitter-patter

He saunters to the couch

And rolls over

Beside me

Revealing his spotted belly

Begging to be scratched.
