Poetry from the Pleistocene

Across the north country, the megafauna roam free
They’ve done so for centuries
A bull elk carrying a six foot rack
In his wake, a cloven hoof track
An aging mastodon roams by
As the birds soar high

These animals have no care in the world
For they do not know
Mankind will herald

    The image is a portrait I made of the Eastern Elk (Cervus canadensis canadensis) a species that lived in Vermont from the Ice Age up until its extinction in 1800.
