Don't Bother Murmuring Next Time

I must have misheard you when you leaned in and whispered those words.

So I had to fill in the empty space___s
With what I wanted to hear.

I thought I heard you
But I wasn’t listening to your distracted eyes,
Nor had I extracted any meaning from the odd intonation
Which was really affirmation
Of a declaration
(That I didn’t want to hear).

I must have misheard you because I was straining too hard
To hear what you
And not what you

Don’t bother murmuring next time.
My hearing has improved.
