A Poem About Pointless Things

Spare bottle caps,
stranded paper clips,
misshapen and bent in
strange angles.
Little round buttons that come in
small plastic bags with shirts,
old leather books
that smell like wet cardboard
with pages that crinkle with each touch.
Lost puzzle pieces,
broken hairbands
and empty tape dispensers.
Rocks and leaves in the shape of hearts,
trampled flowers on sidewalks in the city.
The carcasses of pens,
crumpled origami,
whittled erasers,
and plastic bags of coins.
Frayed ribbons,
boots and shoes with no soles,
the backs of earrings,
ticket stubs,
dried roses that hang from a wire.
