About 1470 BCE a large part of Thira, a Greek island also called Santorini, was destroyed by a volcano. Apparently the inhabitants escaped because among the ancient ruins no bones were found.
gods shook the gravelly ground
earth moaned a woeful sound
then spoke with fury bold
fear moved both young and old--
they heard the sound from out the ground
all knew before ancient Thira blew--
spiny sparks began to fly!
amber ash lit up the sky!
all young and old were wise
and knew to read those skies--
while hot black lava flowed
they fled to ships and rowed--
the years are long and all are gone
who knew before old Thira moved--
now the volcano lives below
and they who sit on Thira's hill
like all alive, are victims still
of the eternal odds chosen by the gods
