poetry challenge: Fancy
Doctor Who's picture
Doctor Who

Nice and fancy

I stand waiting
in front
of a little cafe
(it's my first date)
the one downtown
(it's my first date)
on church street
(it's my first date)
with the purple awning
(IT'S my first date)
excited
(IT'S my FIRST date)
tapping my foot
(IT'S my FIRST date)
twisting the hairtie on my wrist
(IT'S my FIRST date)
skirt of my burnt orange dress blowing in the wind
(IT'S MY FIRST date)
hair pulled into a braid down my back
(IT'S MY FIRST date)
gold snake necklace and earrings
(IT'S MY FIRST DATE)
I look nice
(IT'S MY FIRST DATE!)
I gaze up at the sky
(IT'S MY FIRST DATE!!)
blue
(IT'S MY FIRST DATE!!!)
with wispy clouds
she sneaks up behind me
BOO
she says gripping my shoulders
wow look at you
You're too fancy for me
she says
I look at her
jeans
t-shirt
ponytail
NO
sorry
I say
NO
sorry
I say again

NO
I did it wrong again
NO
how do I keep doing wrong
NO
I try so hard
NO
goodbye
I say

NO
I'm going home
I say

NO
I'm home
NO
in my room
NO
it was my first date
NO
I messed it up
NO
nothing good ever happens when I wear nice clothes

I love all the italics and bold letters, they make it so much more realistic to the nervousness of a first date

thank you for commenting but I'm a little confused
the person in my story doesn't actually go on her date?
I wrote this poem more to kind of talk about the feeling of not quite picking up on or understanding social rules and how upsetting the feeling of I tried so so hard but still wasn't able to human "correctly" is to me sometimes. but if you're reading this can you explain your perspective to me?

I love this so much :) I absolutely feel this way sometimes, like I'll never be able to "Human" right... it's a really harsh feeling and it's hard. But then I remind myself that I will always eventually find someone(s) who does understand me, and that perhaps there is no such thing as "Human-ing correctly" and how no one is perfect. And that even when I feel like I've screwed up horribly and should probably try to hide from myself for a few days, I have to keep going and feel okay with myself because this world is absolutely not going to stop for me :)

( I think I made you up inside my head )
