The Two Sides of Red

The Two Sides of Red

One side is
Love, roses,
Fall leaves.
Sunrises and sets.
So many berries.
Santa
But
There is
Rage and fire
Blood
Devil, evil
War and rage.
These two sides convey
Pain
Love
Heartbreak
Happiness.
The things that red portrays.
All the things that people just need to vent
Two sides
And one person to hold
This one color
This one word.

The Power of Red

Red is, in one word, intense
It is chic red dresses and vermillion lips and roses
It’s the start of the rainbow and the blushing cheeks of the easily embarrassed
It’s the sunset on a scorching day in July
It is lifeguards and stop signs and taillights and first aid

But red is also danger and rage and blood
It is fire and poisonous animals and red flag warning signs
It is the color your fingers turn
when they start to hurt from the cold
It is the color of the flag in bull-fighting and big red buttons that
You’re never allowed to push
It is hot peppers and poisonous mushrooms and the fiery pits of the underworld
Red is, in one word, intense

in the crayon box

red is the color scribbled all over me when i see injustice that i want to change
red is not passive but loud and demanding to be shown to the world
red is the color of menstruation, it makes an apperance with no advance warning
red is the color of the little guy in my head: anger

orange is the color of brilliant sunrises and sunsets that you catch if you're lucky
orange is tinged with summertime
orange is clementine, my walker
orange is my family's favorite creamsicle

yellow is the most frequented gal in my head
yellow is the color of joy
yellow is my friends and family, a new favorite show, a horseback riding lesson, taylor swift's music
yellow is our light source, the beautiful sun

green is disgust and envy
green is the people in my past
green is the lush forests and tress and surface on which dandelions grow
green is my favorite shade of nail polish

Non Beenary

Red Lights

There is a red blinking light in the upper right hand corner of the camera screen.
It’s a low battery warning, and the person holding the camera sighs, sounding mildly annoyed. “Thought I just changed the batteries in this hunk of junk,” they mumble, their voice low but soft. “Eh, that’s what I get for buying some cheap camera from a shifty garage sale, I guess. Hmm… okay, you should last for a few more minutes. Gotta make this quick, then.”
The camera is set down, and it wobbles a bit on whatever precarious pile it was placed on. There’s a scuffling noise, then a short, blond-haired young adult steps out in front of the camera, adjusting their glasses as they do so.

Yellow Sweater

RED

God is real because Red is thick enough to paint with/ because we can use our tongues to trace the face of a demon/ when it’s dark, when we’re bored, when we need fire/ Red, not the red of a stop sign or the American flag/ but Red, a Red that’s gone sour and sweet and bitter like a pomegranate seed stuck in its shell/ or the wilted Red of my old diary’s faux leather cover/ or the Red, the almost Red, the almost more than Red/ of her lips/ Red is proof that God is real/ that God drinks the same wine/ that God laughs at dinner parties and cries after the guests have left/ that God lusts and lives and loves/ But there's another Red/ a Red that’s more than God or the Devil or a Sunburned Face/ a Red found in the scream behind stop/ in the threads of a flag/ in the heart of a pomegranate seed/ in the blood squeezed from the tanned hide of sacrificed skin/ in her throat/ in the grapes that grow from the earth/ a Red too beautiful for us to love

ZoeBee

Period in the produce aisle

My period likes to make an appearance at Shaws on the third Saturday of each month
I know the dents of the stainless steel door in stall 1 like how the shadows know the moon
She likes to jump in while I'm waiting for a donut, filling a prescription, testing for ripe fruit
As I knock on the watermelon rind or prod the mango or pick the stem off the avocado
She will let me know I'm overripe with a knock and a squeeze and a fever-flush
My period likes to be the first debutante to present herself at the winter ball
Fall colors in a sea of cold blues and waxing silvers
She likes to gracefully, daintily dip down the stairs, practically unnoticed until I'm the next one to go in the checkout line
Then tango
Rumba, Foxtrot, bunnyhop, twist across the dance floor, fling herself into the arms of unexpecting suitors
Practice dirty dancing without telling them about the lift

the leaves changing colors on trees.

Red is the L.E.D lights in my room.

It's the beautiful blooming flowers in my garden.

Red is the color of ADL hoodies.

Red is the nail polish I paint on my short nails.

Red is the coke can in the fridge.

Red is the apples growing on the tree

The strawberries on the bushes.

Red is the lipstick that I wear on special days.

The color we mix with white and pink.

The blood that comes when you fall.

Red is the shoes that I wear sometimes.

The cozy socks that I wear on winter days.

Red is the color of a crab.

Red is the pepper that I put on salad.

The red M&Ms

Red is a color as bright as flames

A color as red as my face when my siblings annoy me

Its as bold as ruby

Its a color as warm as ones heart

A color as pretty as roses

Its a color as delicious as cherries

A color as warm as the sun on a summer day

Its a color as strong as the anger inside of you

A color as juicy as the inside of a watermelon

Its a color as cozy as blankets and scarfs on a cold winter day

A color as sweet as m&ms

Its a color as smooth as a lipstick

A color as red as the leaves during fall

Its a color as red as a stop sign

A color as bold and fun as a clowns nose

Its a color that can be as sweet as love on valentines day

A color so warm and bold
