Trees: Lifeline for Our Planet – Writing and Visual Art Contest

A CALL TO ACTION THROUGH ART TO PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT FROM OURSELVES
TEENS: Respond to the challenge – Lifeline – by Feb. 28 for prizes and publication
Contest presented by Young Writers Project and Branch Out Burlington! 
CONTEST DETAILS
THE CHALLENGE: Lifeline: Given the vital role of trees for moderating climate change, in words or visual art describe the importance of trees to you and the critical role they play in saving planet Earth. (Click here to respond to the challenge.)

WHAT THE JUDGES ARE LOOKING FOR: Compelling, original, moving writing and visual art. Entries will be judged on their creativity and demonstration of a passion for trees, an appreciation for the role of trees in combating climate change, and an ability to communicate the urgent need to value trees for reversing our current climate change trajectory. Factual and historical information is helpful for background (note the attached fact sheet), but please, put the science textbook aside and let your imagination guide you. 

CATEGORIES:
1. WRITING – 
Fiction or nonfiction, poetry, prose, songs, commentary, etc.
2. VISUAL ART – Photography, painting, drawing, etc.
Participants are welcome to post multiple times in either or both categories.

ENTRANTS:
For teens from anywhere, ages 13-18, who have accounts with Young Writers Project. (Account sign-up is easy and free on youngwritersproject.org.)

PRIZES IN EACH CATEGORY:
GOLDEN BIRCH (1st) $150; SILVER MAPLE (2nd) $100; COPPER BEECH (3rd) $75 
A panel of judges from YWP's contest partner and sponsor, Branch Out Burlington!, will award prizes and certificates to the top three in each of the two categories. Honorable mentions will also be recognized. 

PUBLICATION: 
The top three submissions from each category and honorable mentions will be published in YWP's digital magazine, The Voice, in April 2022, on the Branch Out Burlington! website, and with YWP's media partners. They may also be included in YWP's annual anthology.

DUE DATE:
Entries will be accepted until Feb. 28, 2022. 

TO SUBMIT:
  • Work must be original and not published elsewhere.
  • Log in or sign up for a YWP account on youngwritersproject.org. Go to the contest challenge: Lifeline, and click "Respond" to post writing, photos, art, video, audio, etc. All submissions will be collected through this challenge. Remember to include a title and category, and SAVE.
