This fear

Yesterday I got an email,
an email from my school district,
the email made me collapse inside,
girls being followed home.
One followed by a man in a van,
near my old elementary school.
One girl followed,
by my friend's old middle school.
What if she had been kidnapped?
These thoughts fill my head,
fear filling my every breath.
Even though,
I am sitting at my desk,
in world history.
I remember how,
I get to school,
walking or biking alone.
What if I am kidnapped?
My friend takes the city bus,
home alone.
What if she is kidnapped?
We never did anything,
to deserve this,
this fear,
muting our senses,
this knowing how,
even when we say no,
we won't always be listened to.
This hard to trust,
what if,
what if,
what if.
