When Anita practically breaks the door down, rambling nonsense, and shooting wide eyes towards the forest by my house, I grab her and throw her on the couch, while making soothing noises from the back of my throat. I put a pot on to boil, then add in the peppermint tea bag that I’ve been saving. Slowly, with careful movements, I pour the tea into our mugs while telling her it’s okay.

When I give her the mug, she drinks slowly with shaking hands, and the chatterbox goes back to normal. Then she says, “There’s a—“ But her speech was interrupted by a huge roar from a polar bear, standing in the doorway.
