A Smoky Night

I walked into the nearly-empty diner and was hit by the strong smell of cigarette smoke. I couldn't see where It came from But it seemed to snake around the dinner constricting the chairs and tables. I sat down at the old rickety counter and rung the bell to bring the water over. "Buzz" I heard from behind me, I whipped my head around to look at what made the noise. It was just the old lights outside dimly illuminating the parking lot, clearly I'm still jumpy from the midnight drive I thought.

My thoughts were interrupted by a rude seemingly middle aged woman, who was probably my server, walking over to me. "What You lookin at Short stack" she barked in a clearly southern accent "there aren't any ghosts in these woods." I rolled my eyes and grond "look lady just get me a burger and sum fries please, It's been a long day." She gave me a dirty look and grumbled under her breath, "no one ever respects the dinner attendant" as she walked away. I still couldn't figure out where the smoke was coming from but it seemed to linger. The longer I watched the smoke the more I realized something. Everytime a light would flicker or the grill in the back would sizzle, the smoke would twitch. Like it was somehow connected to the building itself.

"gonna wake up and eat your food" The lady growled as she threw the dirty plate in front of me. The burger and the fries were so greasy and disgusting, on a normal day I might have puked but not today, not right now. I gobbled the food up as fast as it had come, but for some reason I was still starving, and even though it was disgusting I wanted more. So I ordered another dish and another and another. Until the plates were stacked high in a pile next to me. I checked the clock on the wall and said 12:11, which was odd because I could have sworn I had been there for an hour. I checked my watch and sure enough it said 1:03, I shrugged and thought the clock must just be broken. I

reached for my wallet and threw some money on the table and tried to stand up.”ugh” I grunted, I couldn't move! I looked down and saw the smoke wrap around my leg. “AHHHHH” I screamed, as I reached for my pocket knife. I brought my arms up and slammed into the ground with a thud. As the knife passed through the smoke it seemed to wince in pain as it dispersed and reformed into another tendrel. I leaped from the floor and ran to the door. I slammed my body into the cold glass but I was quickly sent flying into the back wall of the dinner, behind the counter. I saw the smoke swirled and twirled forming into an odd humanoid form, and suddenly I remembered the waitress. “Waitress lady you there” I yelled. I sighed a sigh of relief as I saw her walk through the kitchen door.

My sigh quickly grew back into a scream as she began to disintegrate before my eyes turned into smoke and surrounded me. I looked behind me frantically and pulled a knife out of the droor behind me. The smoke began to swirl around me squeezing my chest. I coughed struggling to breathe, with all  my strength I lifted my knife and stabbed at the creature. As I dug the knife into the creature she curled and backed off, but slowly more and more things in the dinner were turning to smoke, until the dinner itself was reduced to a large mass of sentient smoke.

It curled around me forming into a blob of smoke with nothing but 2 large red eyes staring at me. I started to run as hard as I could, struggling against the smoke grabbing at me, but eventually it grabbed me and flung me to the ground. I laid there all hope lost as it slammed its smokey hand into me. As it was pinching me it accidentally slammed its fist into my pocket, as it fist hit my pocket a water bottle fell onto ground and all over the creature. As the water hit it, it flinched backwards, and without missing a beat I grabbed the water bottle and dosed the monster in water. Itr tried to run but I grabbed it and continued to pour. As the last bits of water fell from my water bottle the smoke monster slammed its weak hand into my face, as a last attempt to end me. But by then it was already too late the smoke disappeared, the water soaked into the dirt and I fell to the ground with a loud thud.

I slowly woke up shocked but awake, I didn't know what had happened but It seemed as though a couple of hours had passed where I was unconscious. I didn't know what to think but Caytlen was more important,  that was the reason I had been driving through here in the first place, it would all go to waste if I didn't keep going. So I Got back In my car, revved the engine and continued down the empty road. As I drove down the long windy road I let out a loud burp, I waved my hand in front of my face to cure my nose of the smell, but for some odd reason even though I never smoke it kinda smells like…..cigarette smoke.
