First Lines

Editor's note: This is a resource for a First Lines XP that is part of the Story Starter Workshop in YWP Academy. Join in if you'd like.

If you take a look at really good short stories or novels, you will see that they invariably have a great opening line. The first line in any story has a number of effects -- sets tone, jumps you into the action, establishes the setting or the conflict -- but all of them lure you in as a reader. Here are some good ones.

It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. --  George Orwell, 1984

This is the saddest story I have ever heard. — Ford Madox Ford, The Good Soldier, 1915

It was a wrong number that started it, the telephone ringing three times in the dead of night, and the voice on the other end asking for someone he was not. —  Paul Auster, City of Glass, 1985

A screaming comes across the sky.  — Thomas Pynchon, Gravity's Rainbow (1973)

He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.  —  Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea, 1952

Setting -- Resource

Editor's note: This accompanies the Photo-Setting XP in the Story Starter workshop in YWP Academy.

Notice how the following passages (from a couple of GG's favorite books) help evoke mood and tone and provide important details for the story. They also show how easily the setting floats into character development and/or  storytelling:

The Perfect Tree

I am sitting in a tree, a perfect tree, thinking about many things that I have messed up in my life. I could name a whole list full of those things. I’m thinking of those people who think I'm not good enough for anyone, for this world, people who think I am useless, a waste of space. I'm here in my most favorite spot, on my most favorite tree, the tree that I have known my whole life. This is the tree where I make important life decisions such as what I can do to apologize to the people I’ve hurt.  This is the perfect tree; the feel of the wood makes me feel calm; I love the way the wind blows the tree's leaves everywhere; I love the way the tree glimmers in the sunlight. This is my perfect tree.

I was walking in the farmer's market when I saw it. It was smooth with detailed little bumps that were like waves of water that remind me of the days of my childhood when I would sail a little sunfish boat at my grandma's house by the sea. Oh, and the handles were so delicate like the newly sprung up butter cups at the first kiss of spring. I darted over to the attendant and briskly asked him how much the beautiful splendorest vase would be.
He said, “$20000 after taxes”, and that kids is why you never shop at farmers markets, everything is overpriced.

Letter to Baby

Dear Baby,
Welcome to the world. It will be hard at first but you are surrounded with people who love you, care about you and want to watch you grow up into a strong independent person. You have to potential to bring light into people's lives. You will learn new things everyday. You will gain strength and I hope you use it to your full potential. I didn’t get all of these things when I was a newborn and I want to see people cuddle you from the moment you start crying. You will have little bumps along the way. But it’s okay to make mistakes. You can always make a change. Right now, you don’t know what is going on, but as you grow you will be able to realize what is right and wrong and make your life as awesome as you can make it.

You will create relationships that I hope will last you a lifetime. Create memories with your family that will make you laugh or feel loved and grateful. You have the potential to win. You have the privilege to have an amazing family.

When I hear a siren, I actually think of good things. I think of sitting in my Aunt’s old Brooklyn apartment listening to the subway roll by, and the sirens fill the night. It makes feel like I am in a city, where things are never asleep. That is the good part of sirens. I also feel very privileged that I don’t have to worry about sirens. Some people, just by where they live, or their religion, or even the color of their skin, have to worry about police officers, and sirens treating them unfairly. It troubles me that something that can bring me such great thoughts can bring others such terrible ones. When I was little, I used to be very scared of sirens. I used to think that there was a robber somewhere, or a fire. I was so scared of robbers that my Grandma had to give me this rock that she said was a worry rock. I had it next to my bed every night until I was 8. So sirens really bring a whole bunch of different thoughts.

i just knew it

I was taking a run in the middle of the day and I heard scary voices in the distance. I just thought in my head keep running. So I did, but I kept hearing it so I ran faster and faster and faster. When I got home I locked all the doors and windows. But I was still hearing it so I drove to my friends house. When I walked in he was on the ground sleeping. I thought in my head why would he be sleeping in the middle of the day. So I woke him up and said I think there are ghosts haunting me and he didn't believe me so I left and went to my mom and dad's house and they didn't believe me either so I looked for clues or anything that will help me. Then I saw a book about ghosts and it describe what was happening to me. I did something bad and got them mad. So that means they were haunting me. I just knew it. I just have to make a treaty or I guess. So I guess I have to something nice to someone. I will do that to my parents. I gave them so cookies and chocolate. Then I will live happily ever after.
